Speaker, headphone and stereo channel test

Use the live audio lab to send controlled sine tones to the left, right or both channels. Start at a comfortable volume, verify channel routing first and then sample a few frequencies to look for obvious playback gaps, rattles or routing problems.

How to check stereo channels

  1. Lower your system/headphone volume.
  2. Play the left-channel tone and confirm sound comes only from the left side.
  3. Repeat on the right channel.
  4. Play both channels and compare apparent balance.
  5. If routing is reversed, inspect cables, OS balance and application settings.

Frequency checks

The frequency buttons generate digital sine tones. Use moderate frequencies first and avoid raising volume just to make a high-frequency tone audible.

Speaker response, headphones, equalization, codecs, amplifiers, room acoustics and human hearing all change perceived loudness.

Safety and limitations

This is an equipment diagnostic, not a hearing test. Stop immediately if a tone is uncomfortable.

The oscillator frequency is controlled digitally, but GearCheck Lab does not calibrate the physical acoustic level or measure a speaker's frequency-response curve.

Browsers usually require user interaction before Web Audio can play.

Can this measure speaker distortion?

You may hear obvious rattles or breakup, but the browser tool does not measure calibrated harmonic distortion.

Why is one frequency quieter?

Device response, equalization, room effects and hearing sensitivity vary by frequency.
