Frequency checks
The frequency buttons generate digital sine tones. Use moderate frequencies first and avoid raising volume just to make a high-frequency tone audible.
Speaker response, headphones, equalization, codecs, amplifiers, room acoustics and human hearing all change perceived loudness.
Safety and limitations
This is an equipment diagnostic, not a hearing test. Stop immediately if a tone is uncomfortable.
The oscillator frequency is controlled digitally, but GearCheck Lab does not calibrate the physical acoustic level or measure a speaker's frequency-response curve.

Can this measure speaker distortion?
You may hear obvious rattles or breakup, but the browser tool does not measure calibrated harmonic distortion.
Why is one frequency quieter?
