Private camera and microphone check

Use the combined media lab to confirm that the browser can open a webcam and microphone together, inspect the negotiated video resolution/frame rate and watch a relative microphone level meter. Permission remains controlled by your browser.

How to run the test

  1. Press Start Private Media Test.
  2. Allow camera and microphone permission when prompted.
  3. Confirm the preview is live and the microphone meter responds to your voice.
  4. Check the reported resolution and frame rate.
  5. Stop the test when finished so media tracks are released.

If permission fails

  • Check camera and microphone permission in browser site settings.
  • Close another application that may have exclusive access.
  • Reconnect an external USB camera/headset.
  • Reload after changing a permission.
  • Verify each device separately with the focused webcam and microphone tools.

Privacy and limitations

The current page attaches the MediaStream to the local preview and analyzes the microphone signal locally. It is not designed to record or upload your video/audio.

Resolution and frame-rate values describe the browser stream. They are not guaranteed to equal the camera sensor's maximum advertised specification.

Why are device labels hidden?

Browsers often hide media-device names until permission is granted as a privacy protection.

Why does low light affect webcam smoothness?

Some webcams use longer exposure times in low light, which can reduce effective motion smoothness.

Is the microphone percentage calibrated?

No. It is a relative waveform-energy meter for confirming input activity, not a calibrated sound-pressure measurement.
