Browser Storage & Persistence Test

Check whether this browser can save and read a small local test marker for GearCheck Lab. This can help explain why settings disappear after reload without changing your other website data.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose Save test marker to write a small random diagnostic entry.
  2. Reload this page and check whether the marker can still be read.
  3. Optionally request the browser’s estimate of storage usage and quota for this origin.
  4. Use Clear test marker to remove only the entry created by this diagnostic.

Read the result correctly

A successful write and read-back shows that local storage worked at that moment. Reading the same marker after reload provides evidence of persistence in the current browser profile. The marker contains only a random token, format version and creation time, and expires after seven days. Storage usage and quota estimates refer to this website origin; they are not a measurement of the disk’s total or available capacity.

Limits and troubleshooting

Private browsing, site-data controls, storage quotas, extensions and managed-device policy can change results. A successful short test cannot guarantee that the browser will preserve data indefinitely or transfer it to another device. This tool does not benchmark SSD speed, test drive health or clear cookies and unrelated settings. If storage is blocked, it shows an actionable warning instead of pretending that a marker was saved.

Frequently asked question

Will Clear test marker erase my saved site settings?

No. It removes only the diagnostic’s own named entry. It does not clear all local storage, browser cookies or unrelated website data.

Privacy and control

Diagnostic data is processed locally in this tab and is not intentionally sent to analytics. Network tools send only their test probes and temporary payloads to GearCheck Lab’s speed-test server. Media and device access starts only after your explicit action and any required browser permission. Downloaded results stay on your device.

Read the privacy policy and testing methodology. If something fails, report the tool URL and visible message.
