What a controller deadzone does
A deadzone is a region around the stick centre where small analog values are ignored. It can hide minor centre noise or drift, but it also removes some fine control. The goal is usually to use the smallest threshold that prevents unwanted movement reliably.
This page visualizes a simple circular deadzone using the browser-reported X/Y axes. A specific game may use a different deadzone shape, scaling curve or extra filtering.
How to test your deadzone
- Leave both sticks untouched for several seconds so the neutral peak can settle.
- Move the slider until the deadzone is just above the repeated neutral offset.
- Move each stick slowly away from centre. Watch when the state changes from FILTERED to INPUT PASSES.
- Repeat from different directions and after rotating the stick around its full edge.
- Use the result only as a starting point, then verify aiming, camera movement or character movement in the actual game.
Why the suggested value is not a universal answer
GearCheck Lab's suggestion is deliberately simple: it takes the largest neutral offset observed in the current sample, rounds it upward, and adds a 1% margin. That helps avoid pretending a browser test can know the exact deadzone your game should use.
Controller firmware, browser mapping, game response curves, axial vs circular deadzones, and user preference can all change the best final setting.
Deadzone too low vs too high
- Too low: camera or movement can creep while your thumb is off the stick.
- Too high: small intentional movements disappear, making fine aim or steering feel less responsive.
- Good starting point: no repeated neutral movement, while light intentional input still registers comfortably.
Deadzone FAQ
Should I set deadzone equal to the peak shown here?
Usually you want a little margin above repeated neutral noise rather than matching one momentary peak exactly. That is why the page shows a separate starting-point estimate.
Is an 8% deadzone bad?
Not automatically. Some controllers and games feel normal around that range, while competitive players may prefer lower values if the hardware remains stable. The useful question is whether the threshold stops unwanted movement without making fine control feel numb.
Does changing this slider change my controller?
