How to run a useful stick drift test

  1. Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth and press a button so the browser exposes it through the Gamepad API.
  2. Put the controller on a flat surface and release both analog sticks completely.
  3. Watch the live dots. A healthy centred stick should stay close to the middle instead of creeping consistently in one direction.
  4. Leave the controller untouched for at least five seconds. Compare the rolling average with the peak value.
  5. Repeat the sample several times, then rotate each stick through its full range and let it snap back to centre before another neutral sample.

How GearCheck Lab interprets drift

The percentage is the distance of the stick from the browser-reported centre, calculated from the X and Y axes. The verdict uses the worse of the left and right stick rolling averages.

These are practical screening thresholds, not a manufacturer calibration specification. Games often apply their own deadzones, response curves and filtering.

What can cause a false or misleading reading?

  • A game or controller utility applying calibration or remapping before the browser receives the signal.
  • Touching the stick, vibration, an unstable surface or a stick that has not fully returned to centre.
  • Controller firmware, browser and operating-system differences in Gamepad API mapping.
  • Wireless interference does not normally create true centre drift, but an unstable connection can make the overall input feel inconsistent.

If your controller fails the drift test

First repeat the sample after reconnecting the controller and, if available, update its firmware. Test by USB as well as wireless. Then check the game's deadzone settings. A small consistent offset may be masked by a slightly larger deadzone, but increasing deadzone also reduces fine aiming control.

If the stick repeatedly sits far from centre or slowly moves without contact, cleaning, manufacturer calibration or hardware repair may be required. Avoid treating one browser sample as proof of a hardware defect.

What is controller stick drift?

Stick drift is unwanted analog-stick input when you are not intentionally moving the stick. In a game it can appear as a camera, cursor or character moving on its own.

Is 1–2% drift bad?

Not necessarily. Very small offsets can exist without being noticeable because many games apply a deadzone around the centre. Repeat the test and judge the result together with real in-game behaviour.

Why does the value change when I reconnect the controller?

Controllers, drivers and browsers can initialise or expose axis values differently between sessions. That is why repeated neutral samples are more useful than one snapshot.

Does this test repair drift?

No. This page measures the signal visible to the browser. It does not rewrite firmware, change hardware calibration or repair worn stick components.
