Keyboard Repeat Rate & Delay Test

Hold one key to inspect the delay before repeated keydown events and their browser-visible cadence. This tests repeat behavior controlled by the operating system and browser, not the electrical scan rate of the keyboard.

How to use this tool

  1. Start capture and keep focus inside the outlined input area.
  2. Hold a normal letter key steadily until several repeat events arrive.
  3. Release it and note the initial delay, median interval and approximate repeats per second.
  4. Repeat with the same key after changing one keyboard-repeat setting.

Read the result correctly

Initial delay runs from the first keydown to the first event marked as a repeat. Median interval uses gaps between later repeat events; the rate is one second divided by that median. Four repeat events are required before the page reports a cadence. A new ordinary key press begins a fresh held-key sample, while releasing the key retains the completed values. This makes changes in system repeat settings easier to compare.

Limits and troubleshooting

Operating-system accessibility options, application settings and browser scheduling can change the result. It is not a measurement of USB polling, switch debounce or physical key latency. Some keys or shortcuts are intercepted before reaching a web page, and a software keyboard may not produce physical-key repeat events. Use the separate Chatter Test for unwanted retriggers from distinct presses. Capture stops on focus loss; Tab and Escape remain available to leave the area.

Frequently asked question

Is this the keyboard polling rate?

No. It measures browser-delivered auto-repeat events. Hardware scan rate and USB polling are different layers that this page does not inspect.

Privacy and control

Diagnostic data is processed locally in this tab and is not intentionally sent to analytics. Network tools send only their test probes and temporary payloads to GearCheck Lab’s speed-test server. Media and device access starts only after your explicit action and any required browser permission. Downloaded results stay on your device.
