How to use this tool

  1. Start microphone access and speak a steady phrase at a fixed distance.
  2. Keep the tab visible during the 60-second sample.
  3. Review the level timeline and quiet windows together.
  4. Repeat with another input or connection before attributing silence to hardware.

Read the result correctly

Each plotted point is a sampled digital RMS level expressed as dBFS. The quiet-window count uses a threshold of minus 60 dBFS and describes only these analysis windows. It cannot distinguish an intentional pause, noise suppression and a physical dropout. Gaps in sampling are shown as timing gaps instead of being silently filled with zero-level audio. Compare the same phrase and processing settings between sessions. The local JSON export records only levels and timing, not a playable audio recording.

Limits and troubleshooting

The browser sees audio after operating-system and device processing. It does not inspect USB packets or microphone circuitry. A quiet sample is not an automatic failure. The session ends after 60 seconds, on Stop or when hidden. Microphone tracks and the audio context are released, while the completed visible summary remains available until reset or leaving. No audio or levels are uploaded.

Privacy and control

Device previews, recordings, selected files and report notes stay in your browser. Downloaded files remain on your device. Network tests send generated probes to GearCheck Lab. DNS lookup sends your requested public domain name and type to our server and the Cloudflare public resolver only after you start a query. Local recordings, drawings, files, device names and battery logs are not uploaded. Ordinary page requests and usage measurement are described in our privacy policy.
