How to test for unintended double clicks

  1. Select the mouse button you want to check.
  2. Click once at a time at a comfortable, deliberate pace. Do not intentionally double-click.
  3. Run at least 20–30 presses so the session has enough repetition to be useful.
  4. Watch for repeated very short same-button intervals rather than one isolated fast press.
  5. Reset and repeat on the same mouse, then compare another button or computer if the symptom persists.

Why the threshold is adjustable

There is no single browser timing cutoff that proves a mechanical switch failure in every situation. Human technique, macros, accessibility software, browser event handling and device firmware can all influence timing.

The threshold flags suspected chatter for investigation. Repeated short intervals while you are deliberately single-clicking are more meaningful than one event.

What switch chatter is

A worn or contaminated switch can sometimes produce more than one logical press around one intended physical action. The everyday symptom is a single click behaving like a double click, or selections opening/closing unexpectedly.

This page cannot see the raw electrical contacts; it timestamps the pointer-down events that survive the mouse firmware, operating system and browser pipeline.

How to interpret the session

After 20 presses, zero suspected intervals is reassuring for that sample. One isolated flag should be repeated before drawing a conclusion. Several short intervals across deliberate single-click trials are stronger evidence that the symptom is reproducible.

Side-button limitations

Back/forward mouse buttons are not exposed consistently by every browser and operating system. The page suppresses normal navigation inside the test pad where possible, but vendor software or mappings can still intercept auxiliary buttons.

What can look like chatter

  • Intentionally clicking very quickly.
  • Macros or vendor software generating repeat actions.
  • Touchpad/touchscreen emulation rather than a physical mouse switch.
  • Remote-desktop or accessibility software altering input behavior.

How many clicks should I test?

Twenty is a minimum for the on-page summary; 30–50 deliberate single clicks gives an intermittent problem more chances to appear.

Does one interval under the threshold mean my switch is broken?

No. Repeat the test and look for a pattern. GearCheck Lab deliberately labels these events as suspected repeats rather than definitive hardware faults.

Why not use the browser's dblclick event?

That event reflects the browser's double-click interpretation. Measuring raw same-button press intervals gives you the timing context needed to investigate unusually close repeats directly.
