Monitor and display inspection guide

The full display lab provides solid colors, grayscale, gradient and sharpness patterns plus screen/viewport information. Use fullscreen mode for the most useful inspection and clean the screen before deciding a mark is a pixel defect.

Dead and stuck pixels

Inspect black, white, red, green and blue fields. A consistently dark pixel on bright fields can be dead; a pixel that remains one color can be stuck. Dust, fingerprints and screen coatings can mimic defects, so inspect from more than one angle.

Banding and uniformity

Gradients should appear broadly smooth, but visible steps can come from GPU output, color depth, browser rendering, display processing or panel limitations. Uniform fields can also expose obvious brightness or tint variation.

These are visual screening patterns, not calibrated colorimeter measurements.

Sharpness and scaling

Use the high-frequency pattern at the display's native resolution. Soft edges, unusual moiré or uneven detail can point to scaling, overscan or monitor processing. Confirm native resolution and operating-system scaling before changing monitor controls.

Display test FAQ

Can the test repair a dead pixel?

No. GearCheck Lab focuses on safe inspection and does not claim that browser patterns can repair failed pixels.

Why does black look uneven?

Backlight bleed, IPS glow, local dimming, viewing angle, room reflections and panel technology all affect black uniformity.

Does fullscreen improve accuracy?

It removes interface distractions and lets you inspect more of the panel, but it does not turn the browser into calibrated measurement equipment.
