How to test monitor ghosting
- Keep refresh rate, brightness and other settings fixed.
- Choose mid-gray and a moderate speed, then explicitly start motion.
- Track the target with your eyes and inspect for dark trails, colored smearing or bright/inverted halos.
- Change only one setting, such as overdrive, and repeat at the same speed/background.
- Use fullscreen and several contrast combinations because transition behavior varies by starting and ending pixel values.
Ghosting versus inverse ghosting
Conventional ghosting can appear as a darker or colored trail when transitions do not settle before the target moves on. Aggressive overdrive can overshoot and create a bright or inverted halo.
The page supports repeatable visual comparison but cannot measure the electrical pixel-transition waveform or calculate calibrated response time.
Why multiple backgrounds matter
LCD response behavior can change with the starting and ending luminance values. A mode that looks clean on a dark background can show different trailing or overshoot on gray or light transitions.
Speed and cadence context
Higher target speeds make trails easier to see but also increase distance traveled per displayed frame. The live cadence readout estimates this page's current animation rate so obvious browser/system throttling is visible during comparisons.
Use the separate refresh-rate test for a longer timing sample.
Overdrive comparison workflow
At one fixed speed and refresh mode, compare Off → Normal → Fast (or equivalent settings). A useful setting reduces visible trailing without introducing a strong bright inverse halo. The most aggressive setting is not always the cleanest.
Limitations
- Your eyes and camera are not calibrated response-time instruments.
- Browser compositing, frame pacing and OS scaling influence the displayed motion.
- The page cannot measure exact GtG or MPRT milliseconds.
- OLED and LCD panels can show different motion artifacts.
- VRR behavior changes with frame cadence and system state.

Can this prove my monitor has a 1 ms response time?
No. That requires controlled measurement equipment and a defined transition methodology.
Why does a bright trail appear only with maximum overdrive?
That can be consistent with overdrive overshoot. Compare the next-lower setting at the same speed and refresh rate.
Can I film the test?
You can for personal comparisons, but phone shutter, exposure and rolling shutter add their own artifacts.
What happens when reduced-motion is enabled?
Motion is hidden and paused by default. Pressing START is treated as an intentional override specifically for this diagnostic.
