Video Playback & Dropped Frames Test

Play a local video and inspect the browser’s playback counters. A file you already know is useful for comparing browsers or display settings.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a local video file; the file is not uploaded.
  2. Press Play and let the same section run in the foreground.
  3. Read total and dropped frames when the browser exposes them.
  4. Pause before comparing another file, browser or power setting.

Read the result correctly

Dropped frames are video frames the browser reports as discarded instead of displayed. The dropped percentage uses the difference in counters since this file loaded. A small count during opening or seeking can differ from sustained drops during steady playback. Compare the same codec, resolution and section before attributing a change to hardware. The displayed video dimensions describe the decoded stream; resizing the player does not change that stream resolution. Unsupported counters are shown as unavailable, never as a perfect zero.

Limits and troubleshooting

This is a playback-path check, not a GPU health certificate or a streaming bandwidth measurement. Unsupported codecs, damaged files, software decoding, display refresh and other apps can affect playback. Local file selection stays within this tab. Changing tabs pauses the video and stops sampling.

Privacy and control

Device previews, recordings, selected files and report notes stay in your browser. Downloaded files remain on your device. The call check sends small HTTP probes to GearCheck Lab. The WebRTC test exchanges temporary connection descriptions through our server and contacts the disclosed STUN service only after you create or join a session. Ordinary page requests and usage measurement are described in our privacy policy.
