How to use this tool

  1. Close or move windows that could obscure the screen.
  2. Choose a neutral grey, white or muted colour background.
  3. Inspect at your normal viewing distance and compare several steady colours.
  4. Repeat later under the same settings and record what you observe.

Read the result correctly

The selected colour is a uniform RGB request to the browser, not a luminance measurement. A lingering outline visible across several backgrounds can be worth comparing with the display manufacturer’s guidance. Temporary retention and permanent wear cannot be reliably distinguished by a single browser session. Keep room lighting, brightness and viewing angle consistent. Fullscreen helps remove surrounding interface elements; Escape returns to the page. The test does not deliberately display a long-lived high-contrast image to provoke retention.

Limits and troubleshooting

This tool cannot certify burn-in, determine warranty eligibility or repair pixels. Dust, reflections, viewing angle and panel uniformity can resemble retention. It uses steady backgrounds without flashing or automated colour cycling. It does not run a pixel refresh routine or alter firmware settings. Save observations yourself rather than assuming a screenshot reproduces physical panel defects.

Privacy and control

Device previews, recordings, selected files and report notes stay in your browser. Downloaded files remain on your device. Network tests send generated probes to GearCheck Lab. DNS lookup sends your requested public domain name and type to our server and the Cloudflare public resolver only after you start a query. Local recordings, drawings, files, device names and battery logs are not uploaded. Ordinary page requests and usage measurement are described in our privacy policy.
