How to run this test
Choose a 30, 60 or 120-second duration. Use the same duration when comparing keyboards or repeat runs.
Select Start test, read the sample, then type into the field. Your first character starts the clock.
Match spaces, capital letters and punctuation. Backspace can correct a mistake; the score reflects the text currently retained.
Let the clock finish, or complete the passage. Record corrected WPM and accuracy together, then repeat after a short break.
Understand your results
Corrected words per minute equals matching characters divided by five, divided by elapsed minutes. Gross WPM uses all retained characters, including mismatches. Accuracy is matching characters divided by retained characters, expressed as a percentage. Positions are compared with the sample, so inserting or omitting a character can make later positions mismatch until corrected. Deleted mistakes are not kept in a lifetime error count. A short accurate sample and a longer sustained sample answer different questions; compare like with like.
Measurement limits and troubleshooting
This measures a person typing through a browser, not keyboard electrical latency or switch quality. Familiarity with the sample, language, fatigue, autocorrection and keyboard layout affect results. The first character begins the timer, and completing the passage ends the run early. Switching tabs or leaving the browser interrupts the run rather than producing a misleading comparable score. For missing keys use the Keyboard Test; for repeated switch input use the Chatter Test. On-screen keyboards can enter text, but do not represent physical-key behavior.
Questions about this tool
How is WPM calculated?
One standard word is five characters. Corrected WPM uses characters matching the sample at their current positions and the actual elapsed test time.
Can I correct a mistake?
Yes. Backspace and corrections are allowed. Accuracy describes the retained text; it is not a history of every mistake you deleted.
